Journalism

Multiplatform investigative reporter based in Ottawa, Canada, with more than 25 years covering politics, government, courts, crime and global affairs at the federal, provincial and municipals levels.

I've won numerous industry awards for my work, including the National Newspaper Award, Canadian Association of Journalists awards and the most-coveted prize in Canadian media, the Governor General's Michener Award

I report for online, print and radio and television broadcasts and podcasts. I can produce edited video and audio content, where required.

Speaking and hosting

I speak to groups large or small on a range of topics:

  • The current Canadian political environment.
  • Political journalism.
  • The media industry.

I can also host panel discussions and emcee events, live or video streamed.

Instruction and training

I lead workshops in investigative reporting techniques for journalists, ranging from introductory to advanced, and covering:

  • Data journalism using spreadsheets, database managers, GIS (mapping) software and webscraping using Python.
  • Writing and negotiating Access to Information (ATIP) and Freedom of Information (FOI) requests.
  • Open-source intelligence (OSINT) for journalists.

I've led workshops for Carleton University, Algonquin College, the Canadian Association of Journalists, the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association, the Marketing Research and Intelligence Association and countless newsrooms across the country.
